National Gun Victims Action Council and Newtown Victims & Clergy for Corporate Responsibility Call for Immediate Boycott of Hallmark
Asked to publicly support universal background checks, Hallmark Chairman Donald Hall, Jr. said, “We do not get involved in divisive issues.” Of course not taking a stand is taking a stand–pro guns. Also Hallmark lobbyists work for the “divisive issues” they do get involved with. Here are examples of alternative cards for June events. NGVAC will continue to offer free cards to send instead of Hallmark’s.
Here is the background to the boycott. Friday, 30 May 2014 CHICAGO In response to a letter from the Newtown Victims & Clergy for Corporate Responsibility (NVCCR) and NGVAC asking Hallmark Cards to publicly support universal background checks, Hallmark Chairman Donald Hall, Jr. said, “We do not get involved in divisive issues.”
In conversations with Steve Dorell, Hallmark’s Head of Public Affairs, Elliot Fineman, CEO of NGVAC, pointed out that Hallmark bans guns in its corporate headquarters to protect its CEO and senior management, and yet has deliberately chosen to not require Hallmark Gold Crown® stores to ban guns. Additionally, Hallmark spokeswoman Linda Odell assured the gun lobby when Hallmark mistakenly appeared on the NRA’s enemies list, that the card giant has no intention of supporting anti-gun initiatives.
“For Hallmark to say it does not get involved in divisive issues is an utter fiction,” said Fineman. “Clearly Hallmark is involved in this divisive issue because not choosing is a pro-gun choice. Further, Hallmark takes strong stands on other issues and pays its eight lobbyists over $500,000 per year to pass laws related to postage, radio, TV and taxes.”
Universal background checks would reduce gun homicides by 2,000 lives per year, says NGVAC, a figure derived from a Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research study of a rise in gun homicides when Missouri repealed its background check law and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FBI Uniform Crime Reporting. Polls also show that 90% of Americans, including 74% of NRA members and 91% of gun owner households want universal background checks, making it a good business decision.
“Given these poll results, refusing to support universal background checks is a disgrace and an incredibly ill-thought-out business decision,” said Fineman.
“We can no longer let Hallmark or corporate America stand on the sidelines ignoring their ethical and moral responsibilities,” said Rev. Matthew Crebbin, Senior Pastor of Newtown Congregational Church and co-chair of NVCCR. “By refusing to support universal background checks, Hallmark has turned its back on gun victims, clergy and the American people.”
Rabbi Praver of the Newtown Synagogue advised, “Ideally we wanted Hallmark to partner with us leading the country towards universal background checks, but they refused to meet with us. We decided it was time to take the gloves off. You’re either for universal background checks or you are not, there is no being neutral—too many lives depend upon it.”
ACTIONS BEING CALLED FOR BY NGVAC and NVCCR Do Not Buy Hallmark Cards. Instead download for free or send electronically NGVAC’s SHATTERED HEART cards or buy cards from a different company.
Call On Advertisers To Stop Sponsoring The Hallmark Channel. By Facebook posts, tweets, emails, letters and calls, tell sponsors of the Hallmark Channel that you can’t support them if they sponsor a company that is against what 90% of the American people want—universal background checks. Urge them also to publicly support universal background checks. Here are key Hallmark Channel sponsors. Share your feelings on Hallmark’s Facebook page, Twitter account and with Don Hall Jr., Hallmark’s CEO. Tell Hallmark it represents the worst of what corporate America can be–hiding behind the “divisive” argument instead of showing leadership integrity. Here is more information about the boycott.
