Once again our hearts and prayers go out to the innocent people whose lives have been taken and whose families and loved ones must learn to go on with irreplaceable loss as a result of last week’s mass shooting at Planned Parenthood.
And, in a written statement, Obama decried the fact that firearms—assault weapons in particular—are readily available and with limited controls in place to keep them out of the hands of persons prone to violence. “We can’t let it become normal…we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Period. Enough is enough.”
But it has become normal and wherever you live there is real risk that your location will be the place where it could not happen but does, where you and/or a loved one will be a victim of gun violence when you leave home—it truly is Russian roulette we have all been forced to play.
And the gun violence prevention groups (large and small) are calling for Obama to take executive actions missing the critical point that THE EXECUTIVE ACTIONS HE CAN TAKE WITHOUT DECLARING A STATE OF EMERGENCY ARE LIMITED AND ARE NOT THE KINDS OF ACTIONS THAT WILL DO ANYTHING MEANINGFUL TO HALT THE GUN VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC. How do we know?
In January 2013 one month after the horror at Sandy Hook Obama issued 23 executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence see link-
Since that time there have been 1,030 mass shootings (including the one at Planned Parenthood) and 142 school shootings. see links-
These are hardly results that would give confidence to a solution based on Obama merely issuing executive orders.
The executive orders needed to halt the gun violence epidemic include; making gun trafficking a felony, suspending the gun industry’s immunity, holding parents accountable as accomplices if their child takes their gun and commits murder. But they cannot be passed unless Obama declares a National State of Emergency to Halt the Gun Violence Epidemic.
Every day that Obama fails to declare a National State of Emergency and then issue the needed executive orders is a day that expands the gun violence epidemic. He is the only one that can stop it.
What Obama should be saying is “I am using the powers granted to me under the National Emergencies Act. I am declaring a National State of Emergency to halt the gun violence epidemic and to protect the American people just as I did after the fires in California this past spring killed 3 people and destroyed 1,200 homes worth $1.2 billion dollars or when the influenza epidemic struck in 2009 and put 20,000 people in the hospital.”
Guns claim 30,000 lives per year and cost $229 billion dollars per year, if that does not qualify as a National State of Emergency than what would?
The single most important thing you can do to help stop the gun violence epidemic is to get others to sign the petition that you have signed calling for President Obama to declare a National State of Emergency to Halt the Gun Violence Epidemic. (See Link below). Act today do not wait for the next gun massacre— it could happen in your neighborhood— stop playing Russian roulette— stop letting your loved ones play Russian roulette.
