Who is a Bad Guy? Someone Who Makes You Mad?

Wednesday, June 10th, 2015

Gun advocates have managed to legalize “concealed carry” in every state and recently on Texas campuses so they are ready for “bad guys.”

But how do you know a bad guy? On the first day of Georgia’s “guns everywhere all the time” law, one carrier accosted another in a convenience store–both thinking the other might be a bad guy. Maybe they should have been wearing white hats.

roadrage-picture-1-255x300

In the last two years in Florida, often called the Gunshine state, men carrying Skittles, popcorn and playing loud music have been mistaken for bad guys and shot dead on the spot. Sorry about that.

Last year, gun owners shot and killed an unarmed black woman, an unarmed elderly Alzheimer’s patient and an unarmed foreign exchange student on their property because they thought they were bad guys. Sorry about that too. Several times a year gun advocates shoot their own family members, thinking them bad guys trying to break into the house.

Another problem is that gun advocates’ definition of a bad guy changes when they get mad. A few weeks ago, a 74-year-old man who police say was lawfully carrying a concealed gun shot another motorist in the face in Warwick township, PA over a road rage incident. In February, Ashley R. Curry was charged with shooting Jamie J. Roland in the abdomen after a road rage incident in Columbia, PA. This month, in Omaha, police arrested Randolph Headrick for shooting at a motorist in another road rage incident. Hey, the motorist cut him off.

Sometimes a boss, doctor or authority figure seems like a bad guy. Last year, Tony DeFrances, a law-abiding citizen and chief technology officer got mad at his company’s CEO and fatally shot him in a Chicago Loop high-rise. Last January, Stephen Pasceri, described as a “churchgoing Army veteran and father of four,” got mad at cardiovascular surgeon Michael Davidson in Brigham and Women’s Hospital and shot him dead. Also last year, Michael Hrnciar, a “law-abiding citizen” who worked at an Illinois chemical business for ten years without incident, decided to ambush and murder a police officer because he got mad. Hrnciar may have been “law-abiding,” but he moved to gun-friendly Indiana from Illinois so he could legally carry a handgun.

Of course when gun advocates get mad, their families and loved ones can also appear like bad guys. This week, a Montana man killed his three children and wife. In the last year, there have been four other instances of men shooting and killing their whole families including Don Spirit who murdered his daughter and six grandchildren at his Florida home last summer.

The truth is when someone has easy access to a lethal weapon, anyone is or can be a “bad guy” if they make him mad.

Think You’re Safe at the Beauty Parlor? These Gun Victims Weren’t.

Saturday, March 14th, 2015

It has been exactly two years since Jacqueline Bouvier Hardy was pulled off a city bus in Northern Indiana by a former boyfriend and shot to death in front of horrified bystanders, including children. “Jackie” as she was known, was a mother of three who had filed an order of protection against the shooter, Kenneth Knight.

More recently, horrified Black Friday shoppers at Chicago’s Magnificent Mile Nordstrom’s watched Marcus Dee shoot and kill his girlfriend, Nadia Ezaldein, while she worked at the cosmetics counter.

Nearly half the women killed every year in the United States are murdered by intimate partners, mostly with guns, reports the New York Times. Intimate partner homicide increases by 500 percent when a firearm is present.

It is not just the women stalked by violent, armed exes who are terrorized. Increasingly, gun-wielding exes kill the women in proximity to their wives and girlfriends. In 2012, the year of the Sandy Hook massacre, Bradford Baument strode into Las Dominicanas M & M Salon near Orlando, a salon his wife managed, and fatally shot three, injuring his wife. In Sioux Falls, S.D., Tyrone Smith strode into the Cost Cutters salon where his girlfriend worked, despite being jailed for domestic violence and under an order of protection and fatally shot the manager. The same year, in suburban Milwaukee, Radcliffe Haughton, who had a long history of violence against his wife and was under an order of protection fatally shot his wife, Zina, and two other women at Azana Salon & Spa in front of horrified customers and employees.

In 2011, Scott Evans Dekraai killed eight including his wife at the Salon Meritage in Orange County. Last year Maria Nunez McDaniel was fatally gunned down at Julia’s Salon Dominican Hair Studio near the Paulding-Cobb county line in Georgia by her husband Robert Steven McDaniel. And last month, Aquilina Nino Garcia who worked at Salonz Beauty Suites in Miami was fatally gunned down by her boyfriend in front of horrified customers and employers.

From Oscar Pistorius to George Zimmerman to Ismaaiyl Brinsley (who fatally shot two New York policemen in December after shooting his girlfriend) gun bullies’ preferred target is often unarmed, defenseless women. The gun bullying even rises into the top NRA ranks.

Thirty-nine guns belonging to the NRA’s own New York City field representative Richard D’Alauro were confiscated in 2010 after charges of assault, harassment and endangering the welfare of a child were filed against him. Luckily, D’Alauro’s order of protection expired and he can again have his 39 guns—he may have to defend himself against bad guys. He “continues to live in fear” says his lawyer, of outrageous charges. Speaking of living in fear, his wife Maribeth testified on Capitol Hill that she endured years of bullying and abuse from the NRA honcho.

What if every month or so an enraged armed woman stormed into Charlie’s or Lou’s bar or a workplace and summarily shot her ex and everyone around him? Despite the men filing orders of protection and notifying authorities of the threats? Would the NRA still defend “gun rights” of suspected abusers under orders of protection? If the dead were men?

Why Shouldn't Domestic Abusers and Stalkers Have Gun Rights?

Chicago

It is hard to believe but true. NRA lobbyists recently pushed a bill through the Michigan legislature that would have allowed gun permits for abusers in domestic violence and stalking cases, including those under court-issued restraining orders. Luckily Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed the incomprehensible legislation.

Those of us who live in Chicago are still haunted by the brazen Black Friday murder of 22-year-old law student Nadia Ezaldein at the Nordstrom’s on Chicago’s Michigan avenue by just such a person. Estranged boyfriend Marcus Dee, say police, used a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun to murder Ezaldein in front of horrified shoppers following a string of domestic violence incidents.

This month in a north Chicago suburb, Elpidia Munoz-Garcia was similarly shot and killed by her boyfriend as was Detret Burley in Palatka, Florida!

Last month, also in the Chicago area, Allan Kustok was found guilty of fatally shooting his wife Anita “Jeanie” Kustok at their suburban home which the defense called a “suicide.” Instead of calling 911, investigators said Kustok waited for a period of time and then took his wife to the hospital, arguing that her death was a suicide. But, testified Dr. Hilary McElligott who conducted the autopsy, it “wasn’t possible for Jeanie Kustok to use her right hand to shoot herself on the left side of her face at such an angle.”

In 2012, Zina Haughton was killed by her estranged husband Radcliffe Haughton along with two other women in suburban Milwaukee, said police. Haughton had threatened to throw acid on his wife’s face and burn her and her family with gas if she ever left him according to news reports. He was under a restraining order. Haughton stalked his wife to a nail spa where she shot seven women.

According to psychologists and law enforcement experts, lethal domestic abuse is predictable and follows months or years of escalating threats and violence. Domestic abusers often become violent when their partner threatens to leave them as George Zimmerman’s recent police-related events suggest.

It is shocking to think the NRA cares more about the “rights” of violent domestic abusers than the women they kill but it is true. According to Marion Hammer, one of the NRA’s top lobbyists who is credited with drafting original Stand Your Ground laws, violent criminals have rights too. When 1,400 probable Florida felons were reported issued concealed weapon licenses including one charged with shooting his girlfriend in the head,  she actually defended their “rights.” “When you begin taking away the rights of people that you don’t like, that’s the slippery slope,” she said. Don’t like? Gun violence is a women’s issue and NRA its macabre sponsor.

NRA Puppet of the Week- George Zimmerman

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015

nra_potw_612tn_gzimmerman

Weeks after emboldening vigilantes everywhere with your acquittal for the murder of Trayvon Martin, your wife, Shellie phoned 911 and told emergency operators “He’s in his car and he continually has his hand on his gun and keeps saying step closer and he’s gonna shoot us.” Three months later, your girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, told police on a 911 call you were pointing “your gun at my fricking face.” Then this week you were arrested for allegedly throwing a wine bottle at another girlfriend who told police you were a “psycho.”

Cop wannabe who terrorizes women in his spare time, you GEORGE ZIMMERMAN, are the NRA Puppet of the Week.

Illinois' First Skittles-Popcorn-Loud Music Gunman Arrested

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Thank you NRA and Illinois State Rifle Association for bringing your vigilante concealed carry law to Illinois, granting the “rights” of high-fear, virility-challenged reactionary men to walk around with murder weapons. The first legal concealed carrier in Chicago was arrested this week for allegedly pulling a gun during a property dispute the Chicago Sun-Times reports. 54-year-old William P. O’Connell joins other Armed While Angry (AWA) carriers who shoot or threaten to shoot over ridiculous disputes for no other reason than they are armed. Just last week a man was accused of pulling a gun on another man after losing in a game of cribbage and a man allegedly pulled a gun over a dispute at the gas pump. Makes sense! Here in Chicago, at least two road rage shootings have occurred this week, one along the tourist-destination Lake Shore Drive.

Police say O’Connell got in an argument over rent money with a 52-year-old man on March 23 and pointed a handgun at the man and threatened to shoot him. Hey, if your landlord is dead maybe you won’t owe rent, right? The victim and a woman both identified O’Connell, who admitted hiding his gun and police recovered a .38-caliber revolver in a vacant apartment.

The NRA’s and Illinois State Rifle Association’s bully tactics are exceeded only by their self-pity. No federal laws were passed after the Sandy Hook massacre and gun lovers can buy as many rapid fire weapons as they want, as frequently as they want, remaining anonymous because there is no registry. But it’s not enough for the gun lobby. Like the little boy who kills his parents and cries he is an orphan, the NRA and Illinois State Rifle Association want to bring their gun culture into the cities and more indoor places, too. Why can’t we bring our murder weapons into libraries, churches and schools they whine? Guns should be allowed in locked mental health facilities a gun loving lawmaker actually proposed in Springfield. What?

oppress

Women abused by unbalanced husbands and boyfriends must be especially happy about Illinois’ new concealed carry law. 88 applicants for concealed carry in Cook County had domestic violence arrests, 77 had gun crimes arrests and 52 had battery/assault arrests. The NRA actually works to allow men to keep their guns while under orders of protect. Hey–batterers have rights. At the same time, the NRA tells the at-risk women to arm themselves too, doubling gun sales. At least three women have been killed with their own guns in recent months thanks to this perpetrator-friendly marketing plan.

TELL legislators what sane gun laws we want passed. COMPEL the legislators to pass these laws.

NGVAC has invited the Illinois State Rifle Association to participate in a live test of whether concealed carry provides self-defense in approved, police training facilities with mutually agreed upon terms. If the Rifle Association won, it would increase carriers, gun sales and support for carry laws. Why won’t the Illinois State Rifle Association take our challenge?
