Justice Gorsuch—Do Domestic Abusers Have “Gun Rights”?

Wednesday, April 12th, 2017

Last summer Justice Clarence Thomas broke 10 years of silence to weigh in on the “gun rights” of domestic abusers. Why can’t domestic abusers have guns he asked? “Give me another area where a misdemeanor violation suspends a constitutional right,” he grumbled.

Weeks later in Pennsylvania, seemingly on cue, Mark Short, despite two prior police reports of domestic violence, legally purchased a gun and killed his wife and their three young children (pictured) two days later.

Everyone from criminologists, to law enforcement officers, to psychologists knows domestic violence predicts gun violence and death. But thanks to the gun lobby we allow and enable––actually sit on our hands and wait––imminent murders because of “gun rights.”

This week’s San Bernardino killer Cedric Anderson is a case in point. Despite a 30-year history of battery charges and domestic violence allegations, he was not barred from legally buying a gun and killed his wife and a student this week. The phenomenon is increasingly known as gendercide.

Just as with Anderson, few were surprised that Marcus Dee was capable of shooting and killing former girlfriend Nadia Ezaldein on Black Friday of 2014 in front of horrified shoppers at Nordstrom’s on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. He had a long domestic violence history. Six days before the murder, Dee attacked a friend of Ezaldein, causing broken bones. Month’s earlier, court documents reveal the victim’s sister said Dee had “cracked Ezaldein’s ribs, broke her jaw, ripped her clothing, stabbed her jacket with a switch knife, ripped her boots, bruised her lip, threw her clothing out the window and put a gun in her mouth.”

Many and perhaps most killers have similar violent histories.

“Cho Seung-Hui, the Virginia Tech shooter, was investigated for stalking two female students,” and “Elliot Roger, who killed six people in Isla Vista, California, in 2014, tried to shove several women off a 10-foot ledge at a party and claimed in a ‘manifesto’ that his violence was part of his ‘war on women,’” writes the Slate’s Christina Cauterucci. Esteban Santiago, who killed five at the Fort Lauderdale airport and Omar Mateen, who killed 49 at the Pulse nightclub, were also domestic abusers she writes.

“Robert Lewis Dear, the alleged 2015 Planned Parenthood shooter; John Houser, who killed two and injured nine in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 2014; and James Huberty, who killed 21 people at a California McDonald’s in 1984,” all had domestic violence histories as well reports Vox.

All six alleged murderers were legal gun owners whose “constitutional right” to own a gun could not be taken away just because they wanted to kill says the gun lobby and Justice Thomas.

If victims of domestic violence were men, would the male dominated gun lobby ignore the body count? In one week in September 2015, eight women were shot by intimate partners and five died.

Hours after receiving probation for violating a domestic violence protection order, James Terry Colley, Jr. shot and killed his wife Amanda Cloaninger and her friend Lindy Dobbins in St. Augustine, Florida. Two days later, Blessing Okereke was fatally shot by her husband in Dallas. The following day, Nuria Kudlach was fatally shot in Pennsylvania and her husband charged with murder. Hours later, Sonja Wells Raine was fatally shot on her job in Pascagoula, MS by her enraged husband. Two other women were shot by their partners but survived.

Justice Gorsuch—will you find that “gun rights” trump the mere misdemeanors that lead to women’s deaths like your colleague Justice Thomas? Will you enable gendercide?

People With Mental Illness Buying Guns? The NRA is Okay with It

Saturday, October 15th, 2016

It is no secret that many mass shooters have severe psychiatric illnesses at the time of their crimes. From Virginia Tech, Aurora and Tucson, to the Navy Yard, Umpqua, Roanoke and Orlando shootings, most shooters exhibited clear mental illness before their deeds.

What is a secret is that while the gun lobby says the “real problem” behind gun violence is mental illness, it actually works–stealthily- behind the scenes to restore the “gun rights” of people with severe mental illness.

nra-mental

After the Virginia Tech murders, NRA lobbyists were successful in pushing through a provision in the NICS [National Instant Criminal Background Check System] 2007 amendments that allows the restoration of gun rights of mentally ill people if they “will not be likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety” and if “the granting of the relief would not be contrary to the public interest.”

The NRA, in a newsletter to its followers, did not hide the fact that the maneuver was a con job that looked like tightened gun access but actually did the opposite–improved access to guns for people with mental illness.

“In several ways this bill is better for gun owners than current law,” read the NRA website. “Under H.R. 2640, certain types of mental health orders will no longer prohibit a person from possessing or receiving a firearm. Examples are adjudications that have expired or been removed, or commitments from which a person has been completely released with no further supervision required. Also excluded are federal decisions about a person’s mental health that consist only of a medical diagnosis, without a specific finding that the person is dangerous or mentally incompetent.”

Thanks to the gun lobby maneuver, Sam French, a Virginian who was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility and told authorities he heard voices, had his right to possess firearms reinstated and his gun returned after a short court hearing in 2009. Why should hearing voices intrude on his “gun rights”?

Another man who was involuntarily hospitalized in a psychiatric facility because of a meth addiction also had his “gun rights” restored, reported the Oregonian. He soon had a “new XDM Springfield handgun at his side,” wrote the paper. Nice.

Reject These Gun Lobby Lies

The U.S. gun violence epidemic which takes 90 lives a day, 31 from homicides, is predicated on key gun lobby lies. “Criminals don’t follow laws,” says the lobby despite the fact that 85 percent of mass shooters since 1981 have been legal gun owners not criminals.

“It takes a good guy to stop a bad guy” says the lobby despite the fact that 18 law enforcement officers were shot by legal gun owners (not “criminals”) in one week this summer.

And finally, “the real problem is mental illness” says the lobby even as it helps people with mental illness own guns. But of course every country in the world has mental illness–rich and poor, industrialized and developing. What they do not have are massacres like Virginia Tech, Aurora, Umpqua or Orlando because they don’t have the gun lobby arming their mentally ill population.

Shot By Your Own Gun? Gun Advocates Don’t Want to Talk About It

Saturday, September 3rd, 2016

It has been more than two years since the Rev. Kenneth Walker was killed in Phoenix with a .357-caliber gun owned by his fellow priest Rev. Joseph Terra. Weeks later, New Jersey resident Stephen McMahon was killed with his own gun after an altercation outside his home. The same week minister Donald Frazier was killed with his own weapon during a botched robbery attempt at his home on the Fourth of July in suburban Houston. During a struggle, the intruder grabbed Frazier’s gun and shot him with it said authorities. Neighbors said they thought the gunshots were fireworks.

It is anathema to gun advocates but heavily armed “good guys” are often killed by “bad guys” anyway, sometimes with their own guns. In January of 2013, Frank Petro, longtime owner of Frank’s Gun & Taxidermy Shop was killed at his gun dealership in Conemaugh, PA. with his own gun. The next day, Keith Ratliff, business manager of the popular YouTube gun show FPSRussia was shot and killed in Carnesville, GA while surrounded with his guns. Ratliff’s show, which featured his friend Kyle Myers showing off the fire power of weapons and triggering explosions while faking a Russian accent, was viewed by millions. The next month “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, arguably the nation’s best shot, was shot and killed on a gun range—not exactly a gun-free zone.

When asked how gun experts and enthusiasts could be victims of the “bad guys” they are armed against, gun advocates always cite the element of “surprise” as if that weren’t the definition of gun crime. Do they think criminals will yell “draw” from a block away like the old West?

When it comes to armed people killed with their own guns, pro-gunners especially don’t want to talk about women. That is because telling women to “arm themselves too” is the way the gun lobby justifies its aggressive promotion of domestic abuser “gun rights.” Both Michigan and Louisiana have weighed “gun rights” against the rights of women to not be killed by intimate partners and SCOTUS Justice Clarence Thomas actually broke his decades long silence to weigh in on the issue. “Give me another area where a misdemeanor violation suspends a constitutional right,” he said, suggesting domestic abusers shouldn’t lose their ability to carry guns.

domestic

Yet death at the hands of an armed, irate intimate partner is a leading cause of women’s deaths in the U.S. A year ago, Amanda Cloaninger and her friend Lindy Dobbins in St. Augustine, FLA were shot and killed by her husband hours after he received probation for violating an order of protection. Two days later, Blessing Okereke was shot and killed by her husband in the Bank of America tower in Dallas. The following day, Nuria N. Kudlach was fatally shot at her home in State College, PA– her husband was charged—and hours later Sonja Wells Raine was fatally shot on her job in Pascagoula, MS by her husband. Also shot by enraged husbands during the same week last summer but not killed were Francisca Jew at a donut shop in Devine, TX and an unidentified Arlington, WA woman.

Pro-gun lawmakers rely on the public’s short memory to avoid passing new guns laws. After 18 police officers were shot this summer by legal gun owners who passed their background checks despite clear red flags they went on vacation, hoping we will forget. After the Orlando massacre—the worst in U.S. history—they refused to even ban terrorist suspects from buying guns. Like domestic abusers, terrorist suspects apparently have “gun rights.”

Dangerous People Who Should Not Have Guns Routinely Pass Their Brady Background Checks. What Can Be Done?

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Fund Memorializes Mom, 3 Kid

Since the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) was established, FBI data show that 222 million Brady background checks were conducted from 1998 to 2015. Of those 2.4 million (1.2%) were blocked.

We are told to take comfort from these data but what we are not told is how many of the 220 million that were not blocked should have been. (The NRA has made sure these data cannot be collected.)

Over 85% of Mass Killers Pass Their Background Checks

According to Mother Jones magazine, of 83 mass shootings since 1981, all but 12 were legal gun owners meaning that 71 (over 85%) had passed their Brady background check.

Recent high-profile murderers who passed their Brady background checks include the Orlando, Dallas and Baton Rouge shooters and the Tucson, Aurora, Fort Hood, Navy Yard, Santa Barbara, Charleston, Planned Parenthood, Chattanooga, Kalamazoo, Roanoke, Umpqua, and Lafayette shooters.

Purchasers With a History Of Violence, Domestic Abuse and Anger Issues Consistently Pass Their Background Checks.

Almost daily we hear the toll of gun owners who passed their background checks but unleashed gun violence at the workplace, on the highway or upon their intimate partners.

Megan Short, 33, (pictured with children) recently murdered along with her three children in Sinking Spring Borough, PA was trying to leave an abusive relationship when the shocking violence happened.

Her husband went to a licensed gun shop in Lancaster County and purchased a .38-caliber handgun and a stock of ammunition two days after his wife expressed fears of her wellbeing to police.

Homicidal, and with two prior police reports for domestic violence, Short nevertheless passed his background check and committed the murders.

A year ago, in Roanoke, VA a clearly mentally deranged applicant—known to have a history of violence and anger control issues—purchased a gun two weeks before killing two reporters as they were broadcasting.

What Can Be Done— “Brady Plus” Background Checks

What will stop this carnage? Real background checks—perhaps to be called “Brady Plus” background checks—that should be as thorough as background checks conducted for adoptions.

Models of “Brady Plus” background checks already exist—in the U.S. to buy a machine gun and in the U.K. to own or purchase guns in general.

As I wrote on November 22, 2015 (Gun Control We Actually Do Today– And Have Done For Decades- And It Works. What A Surprise!)

“…every machine gun is registered— and every current machine gun owner or would-be purchaser or relative the machine gun owner might want to transfer the machine gun to— including their children—must go through a full (total) background check.

This includes having to submit fingerprints and a photograph which are kept on file, a criminal record check, examination of local records, interviews with local law enforcement, a character evaluation including neighborhood acquaintance interviews, work place interviews and personal interviews.”

Real Background Checks Work

Because of these thorough U.S. background checks, there have not been any machine gun incidents (shootings/murders) in decades. They are Exhibit A for the efficacy of real background checks.

“Brady Plus” Background Checks Can Only Happen if President Obama Declares A State Of Emergency Due To The Gun Violence Epidemic.

“Brady Plus” background checks are not going to happen at the congressional level. To issue the executive order that such real background checks would require, President Obama must first declare a National State of Emergency due to the gun violence epidemic. It is essential you get friends, family and people in your world to sign our petition calling on President Obama to act now.

No Massacre Will Pry Congress Out of the Gun Lobby’s Hands–That’s Why We Launched This Petition

Monday, October 5th, 2015

If the shooting of one of their own–Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords–and the murder of 20 six-year-olds did not move lawmakers, certainly the dead at Umpqua Community College last week will not pry Congress out of the gun lobby’s cold dead hands.

After the first graders and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, federal lawmakers still thought universal background checks and an assault weapons ban were too extreme. Even an amendment “to increase public safety by punishing and deterring firearms trafficking” was too extreme for lawmakers and was defeated after Sandy Hook.

The Oregon shooter, like 10 recent mass shooters, was a legal gun owner amassing an arsenal of lethal weapons as the gun lobby says he has the “right” to do. Like the Sandy Hook murderer, the Oregon shooter also had a gun extremist for a mother who took him shooting. Nice. She was reportedly obsessed with the Second Amendment and government “confiscation” of guns.

At NGVAC, where we have lost loved ones because of loose gun laws, we deplore two lies that surface after every mass shooting–that the “real problem” is mental illness and that “no laws” would have stopped the bloodshed. Every country in the world has mental illness but they don’t have weekly shootings and–every developed country has enacted laws to prevent such mass shootings.

lies

There has not been one mass shooting in the United Kingdom since strong gun laws were passed after a shooting in Dunblane in 1996 in which 16 children and one teacher died. The same is true in Australia where strong gun laws were passed after a 1996 mass shooting at a popular tourist site in Port Authur in which 35 people were killed and 23 wounded. Before the Australia laws there had been 13 mass shootings; afterwards none.

As our military installations, media members, churches, movie theaters, restaurants, stores, offices, factories, schools, colleges, national parks and US highways are under siege and Congress won’t act, we have asked President Obama to declare a state of emergency. He declared a state of emergency in 2009 when the H191 flu hospitalized 20,000 people and killed 1,000. Guns cause 10,000 homicides, 70,000 injuries, 18,000 suicides and 2,000 accidental deaths a year in the US.

A state of emergency can be declared when the government lacks the procedures and capacity to address an unchecked natural or man-made public health epidemic. Clearly, that describes the US situation now as everyone waits for the next Aurora, Charleston, Chattanooga, Roanoke or Roseburg.

Will On Camera Assassinations Be a Tipping Point? Or Is More Gun Bloodshed Necessary?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

Reporter and cameraman gunned down during live newscast? Beloved professor killed by another professor in his campus office? Another day of gun bloodshed in the US.

After mass shootings the media “play by play” is always the same. First the nation is horrified, then the suspect’s “mental illness” is examined, then memorial services are held and then, after self-muting for three days, gun advocates surface to say “no laws” could have prevented the carnage because the “real problem” is mental illness.

Wrong on all counts. First, the Charleston, Chattanooga and Roanoke suspects were legal gun owners despite clear mental problems. The gun lobby loves to say criminals don’t follow gun laws but the Virginia Tech, Aurora, Tucson, Fort Hood, Navy Yard, NIU and Santa Barbara shooters–and most other mass gun murderers– followed the letter of the law.

Secondly, other countries have as many mentally ill people as we do—but they have gun laws. After the Dunblane school massacre in the United Kingdom in 1996 and the Port Arthur massacre in Australia the same year, laws were passed that prevented future shootings. They learned their lesson. By way of contrast, after the US’s Red Lake massacre in 2005, laws were passed in the US to make it illegal to sue the gun industry.

In response to the gun lovers who like to argue “should knives, hammers and cars be outlawed too,” no one has ever wounded 82 people in seconds with a knife as the Aurora killer did with a gun. On the same day as the Sandy Hook murders, a man in China stabbed the same number of school children and none died. It’s the guns, stupid.

Many do not realize or can’t believe that the NRA works for the “gun rights” of convicted felons, domestic abusers and people under orders of protection because they have gun rights too. Most people under orders of protection are men, of course and eight women were shot by their husbands in the last week of August—six died.

Right after the Aurora movie theater shootings we, at NGVAC, were alerted by an ex-wife to a convicted domestic abuser who was collecting guns and military weapons, which he was legally banned from doing, and donning body armor. We were told by two police departments the possible mass-shooter-in-the-making had the “right” to his arsenal and society would just have to wait until he killed before they could do anything. What?

August’s on camera murders, July’s movie and military murders or June’s church murders may not have been a tipping point–but the whole nation knows one is coming. One of these days, one too many gun victim families will ask why their loved one was killed and why their lawmakers are serving the NRA not them.

Gun Gendercide Continues

While the nation tries to digest the crime of two media members killed on camera in Virginia by a legal gun owner, a spate of women killed by enraged armed husbands has received less notice.

Hours after receiving a year of unsupervised probation for violating an order of protection against domestic violence filed by his wife, James Terry Colley, Jr. shot and killed his wife Amanda Cloaninger and her friend Lindy Dobbins in St. Augustine, Florida last Thursday, say police. Until Colley was apprehended, three nearby schools were locked down including one where the couple’s child attends.

Two days later, Blessing Okereke was fatally shot in the Bank of America tower in Oak Cliff in Dallas by her husband say police. Husband David Thompson told police he believed his wife was reaching for his pistol, so he shot her in self-defense. Right.

The following day, Nuria N. Kudlach was fatally shot at her home in State College, PA and her husband was charged with first- and third-degree murder the following day. And yesterday Sonja Wells Raine was fatally shot on her job in Pascagoula, MS by her enraged husband according to police. Raine’s “sister got killed the same way by her boyfriend or husband, so that is shocking,” said co-worker Kim Pinkney.

domesticREVupdated

Amazingly, more women were shot by enraged husbands last week. Also shot were Francisca Jew at a donut shop in Devine, Texas and an unidentified Arlington, Washington woman. The Devine and Arlington women are expected to survive.

Half the murders of women in the US each year are by intimate partners and homicide increases 500 percent when a firearm is present. Yet the overwhelmingly male NRA is okay with the gendercide statistics and actually works for the “gun rights” of suspected domestic abusers, also overwhelmingly men. In Michigan the NRA sought to push through a law allowing people under court issued restraining orders to keep their guns. Like David Thompson, the suspect in the Bank of America tower murder in Dallas, they might have to “defend ” themselves.

When women are gunned down by enraged partners, often in public places where others are injured too, the NRA likes to say if women are really scared they should arm themselves too. The rhetoric is offensive. Should Nadia Ezaldein, fatally shot by an enraged boyfriend in front of horrified shoppers as she worked behind the cosmetics counter at Chicago’s Magnificent Mile Nordstrom’s last Black Friday, have kept a gun under the counter just in case?

“Women should arm themselves” is an NRA fiction to occlude the bloody gun “gendercide” committed by known domestic abusers under orders of protection who the gun lobby says have “rights.” In at least four instances in recent years, women who had armed themselves were killed with their own guns because of the element of fear and surprise and because the men were bigger, angrier and motivated perpetrators.

The NRA also likes to say no laws can stop partner murderers, ignoring every developed country in the world where domestic gun homicide does not happen weekly--or at all. If seven men were shot in the head in one week by wives who were known to be violent and armed, would it say the same thing?

Tell these top corporations, with pre-written tweets, to protect their employees and customers by banning guns in their stores and offices.

Why Shouldn't Domestic Abusers and Stalkers Have Gun Rights?

Monday, January 26th, 2015

Chicago

It is hard to believe but true. NRA lobbyists recently pushed a bill through the Michigan legislature that would have allowed gun permits for abusers in domestic violence and stalking cases, including those under court-issued restraining orders. Luckily Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed the incomprehensible legislation.

Those of us who live in Chicago are still haunted by the brazen Black Friday murder of 22-year-old law student Nadia Ezaldein at the Nordstrom’s on Chicago’s Michigan avenue by just such a person. Estranged boyfriend Marcus Dee, say police, used a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun to murder Ezaldein in front of horrified shoppers following a string of domestic violence incidents.

This month in a north Chicago suburb, Elpidia Munoz-Garcia was similarly shot and killed by her boyfriend as was Detret Burley in Palatka, Florida!

Last month, also in the Chicago area, Allan Kustok was found guilty of fatally shooting his wife Anita “Jeanie” Kustok at their suburban home which the defense called a “suicide.” Instead of calling 911, investigators said Kustok waited for a period of time and then took his wife to the hospital, arguing that her death was a suicide. But, testified Dr. Hilary McElligott who conducted the autopsy, it “wasn’t possible for Jeanie Kustok to use her right hand to shoot herself on the left side of her face at such an angle.”

In 2012, Zina Haughton was killed by her estranged husband Radcliffe Haughton along with two other women in suburban Milwaukee, said police. Haughton had threatened to throw acid on his wife’s face and burn her and her family with gas if she ever left him according to news reports. He was under a restraining order. Haughton stalked his wife to a nail spa where she shot seven women.

domesticFRIEND

According to psychologists and law enforcement experts, lethal domestic abuse is predictable and follows months or years of escalating threats and violence. Domestic abusers often become violent when their partner threatens to leave them as George Zimmerman’s recent police-related events suggest.

It is shocking to think the NRA cares more about the “rights” of violent domestic abusers than the women they kill but it is true. According to Marion Hammer, one of the NRA’s top lobbyists who is credited with drafting original Stand Your Ground laws, violent criminals have rights too. When 1,400 probable Florida felons were reported issued concealed weapon licenses including one charged with shooting his girlfriend in the head,  she actually defended their “rights.” “When you begin taking away the rights of people that you don’t like, that’s the slippery slope,” she said. Don’t like? Gun violence is a women’s issue and NRA its macabre sponsor.

Best Argument For Gun Regulation–Carry Advocates Like Veronica Dunnachie

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

BestArgumentCOMMENTSREMOVEDZ

Gun advocates say they are “law-abiding” so gun regulations violate their Second Amendment rights. Yet how come so many end up in jail? Last month open carry advocate Veronica Dunnachie was charged with the shooting deaths of her husband and stepdaughter in the home she was ordered to vacate. An Open Carry Tarrant County Facebook photo depicts Dunnachie “openly displaying her self-defense tool” and brags that “Momma didn’t raise no victim!” Yeah, but did she raise a perpetrator?

Religious Leaders Supporting a Pro-Gun Candidate? It's Happening in Chicago.

Wednesday, October 8th, 2014

Guns have killed over 10,000 in Illinois in the last ten years and in Chicago, it is a daily blood bath, especially in minority neighborhoods. Yet five weeks ago, two prominent religious leaders from crime ridden communities, Larry Trotter of Sweet Holy Spirit Church and Pastor Corey Brooks, Sr. of New Beginnings Church endorsed a senate candidate who is, amazingly, against universal background checks!

Jim Oberweis, an Illinois Republican State Senator from the 25th District who is challenging Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin actually told the Chicago Tribune editorial board this week that he has not seen “evidence” that background checks would reduce crime. Since guns sold without background checks represent 40 percent of all gun sales, Sen. Oberweis must have been kidding.

Unfortunately, Oberweis made two other comments at the editorial board meeting that show him unfit to be a Senator in a country that has 30,000 gun deaths a year. First he, like most gun advocates, wants to use gun violence statistics to prove that gun laws “don’t work” while pretending that gun trafficking doesn’t even exist.

According to the Associated Press, Oberweis told the Tribune, Chicago’s gun violence problem exists despite Illinois having some of the “nation’s toughest gun laws.” What? The City of Chicago has issued clear statistics that many crime guns are unabashedly trafficked from Wisconsin, Indiana and Mississippi, states with looser laws. Does Sen. Oberweis want to pretend crime guns stop at state borders and city limits? And he wants to be a Senator?

Secondly, Sen. Oberweis buys into the NRA/gun lobby paranoid fiction that a database of gun owners is a prelude to confiscation, tyranny and black helicopters overhead. “People don’t believe the government should have access to too much information,” he told the Tribune, as if he is not trying to be part of the federal government. Which side is Sen. Oberweis on?

The same question can be asked about the NRA. While claiming to be patriotic, it has made sure the ATF lacks basic law-enforcement resources like computerized files thus assuring that “bad guys” and “bad dealers” are not caught. Thank you, patriots.

Recently gun advocate “patriots” heckled beloved Catholic Priest Michael Pfleger who was leading a demonstration at Chuck’s, a suburban gun shop that has provided as many as 1,500 crime guns in Chicago since 2009. The Illinois State Rifle Association actually compared Father Pfleger, a the man of God, to ISIS.Fr. Pfleger leads rally against 'bad apple' gun dealers | abc7ch

Speaking at a Chicago event on Wednesday, Sen. Durbin thanked Father Pfleger, who was also present at the event, for “reclaiming Chicago neighborhoods” through his work against gun violence and especially crime gun-linked dealers like Chuck’s. “You are our hero,” said Sen. Durbin.

But Sen. Durbin also asked whether the religious leaders who have backed his opponent even realize Sen. Oberweis has taken a very pro-gun stance. As trauma units and morgues in Chicago continue to fill with gun victims and churches continue to fill with their bereaved families, it is a good question.

Join our action to tell corporate America to get off the “sidelines” and take a stand against gun violence including sniper weapons sold to civilians. When corporations want sane gun laws, we will have sane gun laws.
