President Trump—To Keep Us Safe Shouldn’t We Ban Terror Suspects On the No-Fly List From Legally Buying Guns in the U.S.?

President Trump, on June 15, four days after the biggest mass shooting in U.S. history in Orlando you tweeted, “I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no-fly list, to buy guns.” You were absolutely right. The “terrorist loophole” as the legality of terror suspects buying guns has been termed is a huge and constant threat to all Americans.

During your September 26 debate, five weeks after the massacre, you told Hillary Clinton “I agree with you,” and that “I think we have to look very strongly at no-fly lists and watch lists.” Again you were right. The “No Fly List,” maintained by the United States federal government’s Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) contains the names of an estimated 109,000 people. All these people cannot buy a plane ticket—they are considered too dangerous and too much of a threat—but they can legally buy any guns they want including assault weapons.

The “No Fly List” is a smaller version of the “Terror Watch List” estimated to include as many as 800,000 names. According to the Government Accountability Office, people on the Terrorist Watch List pass their background checks 91 percent of the time!

Blocking potential terrorists from entering this country as your immigration ban is designed to do does not protect us from suspected terrorist who are already in the country and can legally buy all the guns they want.

Despite the Orlando bloodshed, legislation to close the “terror loophole” failed in Congress and the nation still remains at great risk. It is a positive sign that a bill blocking anyone on federal terrorism watch lists from buying guns in Wyoming was introduced this week. “We need to do something about people who are going to attack us getting weapons to do it,” said co-sponsor Sen. James Anderson, R-Casper.

President Trump, to protect us from terrorist assaults please issue an an executive order closing the “terrorist loophole” today. You are the only one who can keep us safe.

No Middle Ground

Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s appearance before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee last week confirms—yet again—what we have stated in prior updates; It is a fairy tale to think that Congress will ever pass any law that will reduce gun violence. The only way to do so is for President Obama to declare a National State of Emergency to halt the Gun Violence Epidemic. (more…)

A Note to Our Supporters About Our Tax-Exempt Status

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

National Gun Victims Action Council (NGVAC) is a non-profit network of 14 million gun victims, survivors, the faith community and ordinary people leveraging their buying power to change America’s gun laws. We are indebted to our supporters for their outstanding energy, passion and commitment to gun safety.

A few months ago it was announced through the gun advocacy press that we had “lost” our 501(c)3 nonprofit status which allows donations to be tax deductible. While technically true because the prolonged illness and death of a loved one in my family delayed a yearly IRS filing, pro-gun bloggers used the lapse to discredit us.

We are pleased to announce that as per the normal IRS procedure, our 501(c)3 nonprofit status has been retroactively reinstated, as we assured our supporters it would. We regret the gap in our status but we more greatly regret the way the pro-gun movement exploited our situation to remove focus on the gun violence they perpetuate and the need for sane gun laws.

If you have not already done so, please join Operation Sideline to compel US corporations to take a stand against gun violence and weapons like TrackingPoint’s “Can’t Miss” Sniper rifle being sold to civilians.

Thank you for being our supporter and being the strength of what we do.

How “insane” are our gun laws?

* Known terrorists not allowed to purchase a plane ticket can legally purchase guns.

*The gun industry is the only industry exempt from federal regulation. (It used to be tobacco and guns, now it is just guns.)

* Guns are not registered, gun owners are not licensed.

*Criminals and people with mental illness, who cannot legally buy a gun from a gun dealer, can go to any gun show and legally buy guns.

“Concealed carry” is now legal in all states–pitting the rights of a paranoid minority against the safety of the majority of Americans.

*Guns can now be carried in national parks and on Amtrak trains.

*Despite Virginia Tech and other campus shootings, legalizing guns on campus is the gun lobby’s next goal.

What the Charlie Hebdo Attack Reveals About U.S. Gun Law Insanity

Friday, January 9th, 2015

By Elliot Fineman

CEO of National Gun Victims Action Council (NGVAC)

As French police went house to house the day after the Charlie Hebdo terror attack, news outlets reported that suspects Cherif and Said Kouachi were on the U.S.’s “no fly” list.

The brothers were entered into the U.S. government’s Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment (TIDE) system, the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center watch lists and finally into the U.S.’s “no fly” list, reports Yahoo News. The “no fly” list prevents people who are considered a “threat to civil aviation or national security” from buying any ticket for commercial aircraft in the United States.

Terror suspects in Charlie Hebdo massacre were on U.S. Ôno flyÕTerror suspects in Charlie Hebdo massacre were on U.S. Ôno flyÕ

Yet, because of the U.S.’s insane gun laws, the brothers, if they lived here, could amazingly have gone into any licensed gun dealer and legally bought as many guns as they wanted because being on the “no-fly” list does not make someone a prohibited gun purchaser in the United States!

People who are on the U.S.’s “no-fly” list but are still allowed to legally buy guns in the U.S. is why, at NGVAC, we do not ask for common sense laws–we ask for sane laws. U.S. gun laws are not lacking in common sense–they are insane.

Other examples of insane U.S. gun laws include gun manufacturers being the only consumer industry exempt from liability lawsuits, guns not being required to be registered or their owners licensed and no background checks conducted for gun show and private sales.

As the U.S.’s largest gun victims’ group, NGVAC is baffled and infuriated at how such insane gun laws remain on the books, despite shooting after grisly shooting. There is only one reason. When any sane gun law is proposed, the gun lobby, led by the NRA, plays its “confiscation card.” A new gun regulation, like universal background checks, will lead to the government taking everyone’s guns, it shouts. Both paranoid and insulting to the intelligence, the “confiscation card” allows the NRA to defeat sane gun laws at the same time it widens its guns-everywhere-all-the-time agenda with more insane laws.

One example is the NRA actually agitates for laws that allow soldiers diagnosed with PTSD and people with severe dementia to legally purchase guns. What could go wrong? And, recently, the NRA got guns legalized in national parks and on Amtrak trains–ironically on the property of the same government it says wants to confiscate guns.

The gun lobby also defends sales to civilians of TrackingPoint’s “can’t miss” sniper rifle which has no defensive use and is ready-made for terrorists, insurgents and hate groups. Its ads show a 12-year-old girl hitting a target 1000 yards away–ten football fields–every time.

As international terrorism increases, we in the U.S. should not feel exempt or safe. Certainly there are cells in the United States ready to commit the type of barbarism that happened this week in France. And, even if such terrorists make the government’s “no-fly” list, thanks to the gun lobby they can still legally buy guns. Allowing this situation is not a lack of “common sense”–it’s insanity.

NRA Puppet of the Week- John Snow with Outdoor Life

Friday, September 5th, 2014

There was a time when sportsmen resisted the NRA’s paranoid “urban warfare” rhetoric as anathema to outdoor life. But not anymore. This week, you railed against “those who seek to take our guns. And, believe me, if they could they would take them all.” There was also a time when outdoorsmen allowed animals respectful fair chase and relied on their skill. But not anymore. This week you lauded Safari International, which promotes killing of elephants and rhinos, for its use of the “can’t miss” TrackingPoint sniper rifle. Nice.

NRA Puppet of the Week- Kasey Hansen

You are pretty darn proud of your pink-plated Cobra 380 handgun, “Lucy,” which you carry to each of 14 different Salt Lake City schools where you teach special needs children. “I think every teacher should carry,” you tell the press, even though you admit “Iʼm not the best shot.” Of course if a shooting situation developed,”Lucy” would likely kill children in the process of “protecting” them thanks to panic and your lack of training. We won’t even talk about accidents that occur with children and the message children receive from a classroom with lethal weapons.
